Flight refunds & compensation

Delayed 3+ hours? That's €250–€600 per passenger.

EU and UK rules pay a fixed amount for arrival delays of three hours or more — regardless of what you paid for the ticket. Most passengers never claim it.

How delay compensation works

The clock that matters is arrival at your final destination, measured when the aircraft door opens. Three hours or more late and you qualify under EU261 (flights departing the EU on any airline, or arriving in the EU on an EU airline) or UK261 (the same for the UK). Compensation is fixed by distance, not by ticket price — a €39 Ryanair fare can earn €250.

What you get while you wait

From 2 hours' delay (short haul) the airline must provide meals and refreshments, two phone calls or emails, and a hotel plus transfers if the delay runs overnight. Keep receipts if they don't — you can claim the cost back.

Delays of 5 hours or more

You can abandon the journey and get a full refund of the unused ticket, plus a flight back to your starting point if you're mid-trip. This applies even when the cause was extraordinary.

Delayed US flight

No fixed compensation exists for US domestic delays. But a "significant" delay — 3 hours domestic, 6 hours international — lets you cancel and take a full cash refund under DOT rules. Most major carriers also commit to meals and hotels for controllable delays; check the DOT customer-service dashboard for your airline.

Common questions

My flight departed late but arrived only 2h50 late. Do I qualify?

No — arrival delay must be at least 3 hours. Airlines often make up time in the air. Check your actual arrival time on FlightAware or the airport's records.

I was delayed because of a strike. Is that extraordinary?

Strikes by the airline's own staff (pilots, cabin crew) are generally not extraordinary in the EU and UK — you can usually claim. Strikes by air-traffic control or airport staff usually are.

How long does a claim take?

Airlines that pay voluntarily take 2–8 weeks. If the firm has to go to a regulator or court it can take several months — you still pay nothing up front.

Can I claim for a business trip my employer paid for?

Yes. Compensation belongs to the passenger, not whoever paid for the ticket.
