The single-booking rule
EU and UK courts treat connecting flights on one reservation as a single journey. A short delay on leg one that makes you miss leg two is the airline's problem: it must reroute you at no cost and, if you arrive 3+ hours late at the final destination, pay distance-based compensation calculated on the whole route, not just the delayed leg.
What to do at the airport
Go to the airline's transfer desk and insist on rebooking on the next available flight, including on other airlines if that's faster. Ask for meal vouchers and a hotel if overnight. Keep boarding passes and any written explanations — they're your evidence.
Flights outside the EU/UK
Missed connections on US itineraries follow the airline's own contract of carriage: you'll be rebooked, and if the delay is significant you can refund the unused portion. No fixed compensation applies, so consider your DOT refund rights and travel insurance for hotel costs.
Common questions
Does it matter which leg was delayed?
No. What matters is that the flights were on one booking and you arrived 3+ hours late at the final destination.
My connection was outside the EU. Am I still covered?
If the journey started at an EU/UK airport on a single booking, yes — even for connections in Dubai or New York. Rulings on this are well established.
The airline put me on a flight the next day. What am I owed?
Rerouting, a hotel and meals for the night, and compensation based on the full-route distance if the arrival delay was 3+ hours.
